To be fair, Borges was doing essentially the same thing at around the same time -- but with more, to me, conceptual heft, whereas Yourcenar's renderings are deft and readable enough but not, in general, so much more than that.

For the most part they were not. When you finally find out what happens to Wang-Fô after all these years, and you understand why the ending was removed from the school book version...As it is usual with short stories books, some were good and others were not as good. Very nice reading.

Interesting to see legends and myths originating from Asia, Europe and the Mediterranean that most readers would not be familiar with. I expected more fairy tale type stories. It's not a book that I would recommend but Yourcenar is still one of the best writers that I've ever read as her Hadrian memoires are unforgettable and I'll read that book every few years.
